Showbiz CV: Alan Rickman is one of Britain's most famous actors. His talents are recognised around the world.

He initially wanted to be a graphic designer, though won a place at the Royal Academy of Art and Drama at the age of 26. After graduating three years later, he jumped straight into a film role in Die Hard.

Since then, the film scripts have rolled in - Galaxy Quest, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Rickman is also known for his theatre work and as a director.

Potty about: Theatre - that's what he really calls 'magical'.

Movie magic: Actor Tim Roth was originally lined up to play potions master Snape, but he opted to do Planet of the Apes instead. Alan Rickman replaced him.

If he really had magic powers he would... This guy doesn't need magic powers - he's succeeds in everything he does!
