Lebanon is an important commercial centre for the Middle East but is recovering from a long civil war.
It borders Israel and became an important area when Israeli troops invaded in 1982.
The last of the Israeli forces pulled out in May 2000 but Syrian soldiers are still in Lebanon.
The country contains many Palestinian refugees. They may form part of any deal that is struck between Israel and the Palestinians.
