England failed to qualify after a disastrous qualifying campaign, but the Republic of Ireland reached the second round after stunning Italy 1-0 in the group stage.
The Irish went out in the second round to Holland, who lost out to Brazil in the quarter-finals.
Brazil went on to win the tournament on penalties after a boring draw with Italy, when Roberto Baggio missed the final penalty, handing Brazil their fourth World Cup triumph.
