Defending champions Brazil lost their star Pele in the first game to a bad thigh muscle injury, but still had enough talent to reach the final.

England were the only British team to reach the World Cup, which was the first tournament where tough tackling and physical play began to overshadow skill.

Up against Czechoslovakia in the final, Brazil went behind before going on to win their second World Cup in a row.
