RAF Tristar Royal Air Force air-to-air tankers
Royal Air Force planes provided extra support for the US fighter jets.

Many of them had special refuelling systems, such as:

  • RAF Tristar
  • VC-10 tanker aircraft
These aircraft from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire could refuel US Navy and Marine Corps jets in mid-air.

In battle situations jets have to travel long distances but cannot return to aircraft carriers to refuel.
