I think it's important to give to charity
Updated 05 July 2004, 08.46
Liz won a competition about giving and taking money
A national competition 'Are you a Giver or a Taker?' asked young people what they would do if they were offered 500.

The winner was picked at random from the most popular answer - which was to give at least 200 away.

Liz from Sheffield won the competition and was given 500, of which she gave 250 to charity.

In her report she tells us why she thinks it's important to give to charities.

"The Giving Nation competition was advertised on one of my favourite websites.

The idea of being able to give to charity and gain something out of it myself was also appealing.

Give half away

I decided that if I was given 500 I would keep half and give half away.

When I found out I had won I decided I would split the 250 fund for the charities' prize money between the NSPCC and Cancer Research UK.

Opened my eyes

I have also met a team researching into childrens' cancer and had my photo taken for the local paper.

There are many cases of childrens' cancer. The information I got from them really opened my eyes.

The people at Cancer Research and the research team were all great.

They have even invited me to abseil for charity! I might not take them up on that one, it's a bit too scary for me!

More charity work

I plan to save a bit and spend a bit of the rest of the money that I won.

In the future I'm going to try and do more work for charities, especially cancer research.

Giving to charity is great and it can be fun too!"

Liz, 16, Sheffield

Why don't you write us a Press Pack report - and get it published on the site?!

It can be about anything that's happened in your local area - or your views on the news.
