I'm a ball girl at Wimbledon!
Updated 26 June 2004, 12.29
Claire is a ball girl at Wimbledon
At the Wimbledon Tennis Championships it's not just the players who run around on the court.

Ball boys and girls have the important job of making sure balls are on hand at all times.

Claire's been a ball girl at Wimbledon for two years and in her report she tells us about the training that was involved.

"This is the second year I'm a ball girl at Wimbledon.

I was given the opportunity to do it at school and it seemed like a good experience.

I don't play tennis though - I'm really bad at it!

Written tests

You have to do 12 weeks of training before the competition starts.

We did circuit training, mock court situations in game conditions, written tests on the rules of tennis and fitness tests too.

The practical tests included shuttle sprints and rolling and feeding ball skills.

Military-style

It's really difficult, and the training is like military-style.

The trainers are quite strict and scary!

I thought they were intimidating at first but they're really nice.

Lots of stamina

Fitness levels depend on what position you do. I stand at the back of the court so I don't run around much.

But you do need stamina because you're on court for about two hours.

Balancing school work

Being a ball girl does interfere with school a bit. I had my GCSE history exam this morning and then came in!

I didn't have to do that much training during term time though as I did it last year, but you have to work around it and balance it all out.

My highlight so far at Wimbledon was doing the guard of honour line-up at the Final last year, where the players walk past all the ball boys and girls.

Angry players

I like working with fiery players who get angry and then I have to go get them their towels.

Although I did get hit by a ball when Sebastien Grosjean was playing last year, which hurt a bit.

Recommend it

I've never worked on Centre Court before, but I'd be really nervous if I did because there'd be loads of people there.

I definitely recommend doing it and it's a great thing to tell your grandkids!"

Claire, 16, London

Why don't you write us a Press Pack report - and get it published on the site?!

It can be about anything that's happened in your local area - or your views on the news.
