I can't go to the school of my choice
Updated 07 May 2004, 10.35
Sophie
Sophie wants to go to Whitchurch High School, the same high school as her friends.

But because there were too many kids at this school already, she's not able to go.

And now she doesn't go to a school at all but has lessons at home.

In her report Sophie tells us how difficult she is finding it not being with her friends.

"I was really upset when I found out that I was not going to be allowed to go to the same high school as my friends.

I don't think it's fair because there are other kids in my road who are allowed to go to this high school because they live nearer to it than me.

Sophie's school day at home
8.30am: start lessons
10.00am: 15 minute break

1.00pm: lessons
2.00pm: break
2.15pm: lessons
3.15pm: finish
I didn't want to go to another high school - it can be difficult enough starting high school anyway, so I wanted to be with my friends from primary school.

But because I didn't get in, I'm now having lessons at home. It has been like this since last July.

Dad marks work

It's really difficult, not mixing with anyone during the day - and it can be really boring.

My grandfather helps me with my lessons and my Dad marks my work when he gets home in the evening.

Hanging out

I get to see my friends after they've finished school and I sometimes do homework with them, so I know what they've been doing.

But I really miss not being at a school, being with friends and hanging out in the playground.

Miss art

I also miss not having lessons too, I know a lot of kids would love to not be at school, but I actually enjoyed it.

I miss art classes the most, it's my favourite subject.

I'd be overjoyed if I had the chance to go to the same school as my friends.

Wait and see

I wouldn't mind if I was held back because it would mean I could catch up on all the work I've missed.

I'm hoping to find out soon if I've been accepted in the high school I want to go to.

I'm tired of being at home and just want to be back with my friends."

School How do you feel about secondary school?
opening quotePrimary school was much better - I never had any homework and had three break times. I feel more stressed at secondary school with constant tests and exams.closing quote
