I used to be a bully
Updated 23 September 2004, 16.34
boy being bullied
Sixteen-year-old Darren used to be a bully. He picked on other kids and called them names.

Darren had lots of problems at home with his mum, but now his life's really changed.

In his report he tells us why he was a bully and why he'd never do it again.

"I went round picking on people, hitting them, getting into fights, ripping their clothes.

I could see them getting frightened and sometimes they'd cry but I didn't feel pity.

Problems at home

Mum drank (alcohol) and beat us. I took it out on others.

I had loads of stress. I wanted to let it out but it was wrong to do it to other kids.

New start

But everything is different now.

I realised I shouldn't do it. I moved out of mum's and now I live in a hostel and I'm going to college.

I've really changed. I realised I shouldn't have done it.

Now, If I see people bullying someone I help them. I help the kids. I tell the bullies not to bully them 'cos it's not nice.

Ashamed

I can't say I didn't mean to do it, 'cos I did mean to at the time, but I look at it now and I feel sorry about doing it.

I feel ashamed of myself."

Darren, 16, Manchester
