I'm trying to ban bullfighting in my country
Updated 20 September 2004, 10.04
Barbara is against bullfighting
Fourteen-year-old Barbara from Portugal feels bullfighting is wrong.

She belongs to a Portuguese animal rights organisation called Animal - and campaigns to get it banned.

In her report she tells why she is so against one of her country's oldest traditions.

"I don't agree with bullfights because it's a violence that's inflicted upon animals.

It's an activity which I consider to be unfair and immoral.

Using animals for entertainment is not acceptable, especially when pain and suffering is inflicted.

Demonstrations

What I try to do is to influence others to understand how bullfights are wrong and should end.

I take part in anti-bullfight demonstrations, subscribe to petitions and I talk to people.

I have one friend who likes bullfights.

He really enjoys attending bullfights and watching them on TV.

I don't know how.

All my other friends oppose bullfights, when I show them pictures and leaflets they get really disturbed.

Bad entertainment

I don't think bullfights reflect our culture.

It's a violent tradition that has no place in a country that has many other traditions that are non-violent.

Some people think it's fun but what is really happening is the torture of animals just for entertainment.

I believe bullfights will be banned in Portugal quite soon.

Global ban

I think more people are becoming more active and more informed about the wrongs of bullfighting.

And if each one of us has a similar attitude globally that will help bring an end to bullfights.

I don't know when it will be banned but I'm sure it will happen soon."
