Malta is one of 10 new countries joining the EU on 1 May 2004.

We've asked 14-year-old Roxanne who lives in Malta to tell us a little bit about life in her country.


What sports do you play?
I dance and practice gymnastics

Who is your sporting hero?
Yuri Chechi, the well-known Italian gymnast


What's your favourite TV show?
Fame Academy

What's your favourite film?
Legally Blonde

What's your favourite book?
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

What's your favourite type of music?
I enjoy every type of music but I like pop best. My favourite bands are Blue and Evanescence

Who's the biggest international singer/group in your country?
Ira Losco - she came 2nd in the Eurovision song contest in 2002


What's your favourite subject at school?
Business studies

Historical remains dating back to various eras which can be admired on such a small island, like gigantic Neolithic temples, imposing bastions and architecturally rich palaces

The friendliness of the people, the rather calm style of living and the fact that it is a safe place to live in, with the absence of terrorism

What does the European Union mean to you?
The chance to become a member of a much greater family where one shares new opportunities and cultural exchanges
