Austeja
Lithuania is one of 10 new countries joining the EU on 1 May 2004.

We've asked 11-year-old Austeja who lives in Lithuania to tell us a little bit about life in her country.


What sports do you play?
I like Physical Training at school but I'm not really into sports. I prefer music. I sing in a choir, play the piano and play the Kankles (national stringed instrument)

Who is your sporting hero?
Don't have one but basketball is the most popular sport in Lithuania


What's your favourite TV show?
The Simpsons, Sabrina. I also watch the Mexican soaps Salomeja and The Wild Girl

What's your favourite film?
Elvira the Princess of Darkness

What's your favourite book?
All books by Astrid Lindgren. I also enjoyed The Story of Helen Keller by Lorena A Hitckok

What's your favourite type of music?
Pop music. My favourite groups are Mango, Geltona (yellow) and Bavaria

Who's the biggest international singer/group in your country?
A rock band called Skamp


What's your favourite subject at school?
Music

Does your school have any unusual subjects?
Visual Learning - in fact we call it a slide lesson, as we have to watch slides and express our opinion on things we see. We've learnt lots of interesting things about art during these lessons


What's your country's national dish?
Cepelinai (potato dumplings with an onion and sour cream sauce)

What is your country famous for?
Lithuanian is famous for its jazz musicians and basketball players

What do you like best about your country?
There are a lot of beautiful places in my country. Probably the most known is Trakai town with its old castle. There are many nice churches all over Lithuania

What does the European Union mean to you?
I think that life will become better. I can't say that I understand these political things very well, but I know that Lithuanians are happy about it
