Visitors to Cornwall are ruining our beaches
Updated 06 April 2004, 11.00
A surfer
Fistral beach in Cornwall is one of the best surfing beaches in the UK.

And because of the great surf people from all over the country go there to ride the waves.

John's a young local surfer but because the beach is so popular with tourists, he and his mates feel they are getting pushed out of the area.

"I surf at Fistral beach every week of the year if the weather's right.

I've ridden 6ft waves even though I'm only 15.

The beach isn't massive and about half of it can get taken up by people who don't live in the area.

Lives at risk

Some of them drop litter and don't keep to the flagged areas of the beach, some even ignore the lifeguards.

They put their own lives and other people's lives at risk.

Rubbish waves

In the water the adults from outside the area tell young local surfers where to go, they send you to a rubbish wave while they ride the best ones.

Some people say that travelling surfers bring a lot of money into Cornwall, and that's true but I think they still should behave themselves."

John, 15, Cornwall
