Are the Mars missions worth it?
Updated 18 March 2004, 10.52
The surface of Mars
Nasa has two robotic probes, Spirit and Opportunity, on the surface of Mars finding out more about the red planet.

In Louise's report she debates whether it's a good idea to find out more about this planet or if it's just a waste of money.

Is it necessary to spend so much money sending robots to Mars?

Here are a few points on both sides.

Learn about Earth

On one hand Mars is the most Earth-like planet known to humans.

By finding out if there was life on Mars and if so what happened to it, we could find out more about what will happen to the Earth in the future.

No life?

On the other hand there might not have been life on Mars at all and therefore we would be spending a lot of money on nothing.

However, if they find life (which is possible because they recently found ice on Mars) we could possibly live there.

There may be minerals we could use to make air, which we would need.

Down the drain

In spite of this, the mission could fail.

The Americans are already on their third robot and take Beagle 2 for instance, where did it go, nobody knows!

It could all be just a load of money down the drain.

Is it worth sending robots to Mars? What do you think?"

opening quoteI think the money they spend on the Mars missions could be put into better use like feeding the hungry in Third World countries.closing quote

opening quoteMars missions are worth it. When we explore Mars and other planets we learn more about the history of the universe and if there could be life out there.closing quote

opening quoteI think it's a good idea to send the robots up there. Even if they don't find anything it's a cool experience to learn about a different planet. I'm all for it!closing quote
