First in was Kelly Holmes, fresh from her European and British record in the 1,000m. Then it was Marion Jones, Olympic gold medallist for 100m and 200m and winner of the long jump tonight with a jump of 6.75m.
After having my photo taken with her, she signed her race number and gave it to me.
Next in was the athlete I admire the most, world record holder, Olympic champion and possibly the greatest male distance runner of all time, Haile Gebrselassie, another photo, another autograph.
Gasps of amazement
The evening was coming to a climax and all the attention was focused on the final event - the men's 60m final, the atmosphere was electrifying.
Suddenly there were gasps as Darren Campbell, one of the favourites, was disqualified for a false start. Could it get any more exciting?
While they finished changing, Mark and Darren noticed me standing nearby and came over, this was unbelievable, more photos and autographs, then Darren reached into his bag and to my amazement gave me his Great Britain top as a souvenir.
What an unbelievable end to an unbelievable day!
