  My trip to South Africa
Updated 12 February 2004, 11.36
Megan's looking forward to her trip to South Africa
Megan will be visiting projects in South Africa which help tackle the spread of Aids and poverty.

In her report she tells us how she got the opportunity to take part in this special trip.

And Megan will be chatting on the Global Issues message board from South Africa on Sunday 15 February at 7.00pm (UK time).

"On Saturday, 14 February I am leaving to travel to Cape Town in South Africa with a group of past and present students from my school.

We're going to visit projects run by the South Africa Red Cross.

This trip is the prize we were awarded from Giving Nation last year.

Our school won the international video award for the fundraising we have done for the Horn of Africa Learning Trust (HALT) which helps fund the education system in Somaliland.

Fundraising events

I have been involved with this project for three years.

I have sung in the Christmas talent shows, organised fundraising events, such as doughnut eating competitions and a variety show.

And I've worked on the School Council's work promoting HALT around the country.

Trip of a lifetime

In 2003 four students and myself travelled to Downing Street to accept The Giving Nation Award to acknowledge our hard work for HALT.

After a stirring speech by our school's head boy James Batty, we were rewarded with this trip of a lifetime, to South Africa.

Different life

We will be visiting Cape Flats, one of the townships, where life is very different.

Our group has discussed the many problems facing these areas; HIV/Aids, crime and poverty.

We will be working with pupils of our own age who are trained by the Red Cross in South Africa as peer mentors.

They educate their peers about HIV/Aids and the various ways of slowing this spread.

We have also been learning about Nelson Mandela and apartheid; we will be visiting Robben Island where Mandela was imprisoned.

Important work

I am extremely excited about the trip and am hoping to gain a greater understanding of a culture very different to Britain.

By the end of the trip I am sure that my own awareness of the work organisations do in communities at risk will have changed.

And I'll be able to see first hand the importance of the support they provide."

Megan, 14, Nantwich
