We've set up a fruit 'n' veg market at school
Updated 04 February 2004, 08.17

Tuckswood First School in Norfolk have set up a fruit and vegetable market in their playground.

It's all part of a national campaign to encourage school children to ditch the junk food for fresh food.

In their report Shannon and Eloise tell us why their market is so good.

"At school we've been doing lots of work about keeping ourselves healthy.

If we eat lots of fruit and vegetables that are good for us we learn better and use our brains and think.

We are trying to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day every day, at school and at home as part of the 5-A-Day Norfolk initiative.

We also decided to start a market in our playground.

This is so that our mums and dads could buy fruit and vegetables for us.

We went to a big supermarket and got a big bag of fruit and vegetables.

Vegetable sorting

Then we went to a local greengrocer's and got the same things - it was cheaper there.

Every Thursday, some of our mums sort it out so that people can have a bag of fruit and vegetables every week that costs £5 or £10.

In the paper

On a Friday we sell the fruit and vegetables on the market in the playground.

We made lots of signs and posters.

Some people who aren't at our school came along as well.

We've been in the paper too. They took photographs and it was good fun.

Fave fruit

We are definitely eating more fruit and vegetables, and we can try things we haven't eaten before. We like having our own market.

Our favourite vegetables are carrots and cauliflower and sweetcorn. Our best fruit are apples, oranges and tangerines, kiwis and lemons.

Three cheers for fruit and vegetables."
