There's too much pressure to smoke!
Updated 23 January 2004, 18.29
Teenage smoker
"Jak" started smoking because he was stressed, but now he can't stop.

He tells us about his experiences.

"I am in year 10 at school, and I'd like to remain anonymous.

I have recently started smoking. I started because the pressure that schools put you under to complete work for deadlines is enormous.

My friend offered me a cigarette and told me it would help calm me down. I took it.

I'm addicted

Since that day I have wanted to stop. I am now addicted to smoking and I have to smoke everyday before I go home.

I am scared that someone in my family will find out.

I am scared my mum will smell the smoke in my clothes or find the cigarettes in my pockets. It is also costing me a lot of money. I have to spend 10 - 15 per WEEK to fuel my habit.

So stupid

I hate myself for starting and it is the stupidest thing I have ever done.

I just want to tell you that the amount of under age smokers and drug users is increasing dramatically. You do not understand how many young people do this sort of thing.

I would just like you to warn people about the dangers.

I am trying to quit at the moment."

"Jak", 14
