Let me tell you about Hanukkah
Updated 07 December 2003, 11.18

All over the world adults and children celebrate Hanukkah. This traditional Jewish festivity is also celebrated in the UK.

Amelia wants YOU to know about this important Jewish tradition and explains how it all started and what happens during it.

This is her report

"Hanukkah, is the festival Jewish people celebrate around the time of Christmas.

It all started when the Maccabees fought against the Greeks because they wanted to practise their religion freely.

The Greeks knocked down our temple (Bet Hamikdash) and when the Jews went back into it, they found the Hanukkah.

The Jews thought that there was only enough oil to light the Hanukkah for one night, but it lasted for eight!

This is the miracle and this is what we celebrate.

We light a candle every night for eight days, and it is tradition to give presents to the children on each night.

We traditionally eat potato - Latkes, chocolate money, and doughnuts.

Happy Hanukkah to everybody!
