  What makes a good book?
Updated 21 September 2003, 12.44

Lily describes the elements she thinks make a good read.

"I think that a good book should have personal views from the main character/characters.

This helps you relate to the books.

A good read should also have a lot of suspense, which makes you want to read on and on and on and never put the book down.

Laughter and tears

This encourages you to keep reading.

Author Michael Morpugo has a lot of this in the books he has written.

Books should also have bits in them which change your emotions - such as having a very tearful moment to a very hilarious moment.

Action and drama

Jacqueline Wilson has a lot of funny and sad moments in her books.

A book should have a bit of action in it but not too much because it can sometimes go overboard.

The Lord of the Rings has a good proportion of action and drama, which keeps you on the edge of your seat.

And last but not least a good book should also deal with things that children might face such as bullying or racism.

I think it's good that a lot of authors are now writing about this."

Lily, 11, Bristol
