  Leave zoos alone!
Updated 10 September 2003, 11.09

Rosemary thinks that zoos can play an important role in helping some animals.

In her report she defends them and says that not all animals are kept in small cages.

"Not very long ago someone wrote in about cruelty in zoos.

I can understand their opinion, but as a zoo member I have to speak out and defend them.

Animal conservation

Zoos are not just small, smelly parks with a few tin boxes for the animals, despite what people might think.

In fact, the zoo I'm using as an example, Marwell Zoological Park near Winchester, plays a crucial role in animal conservation all round the world.

Saved from extinction

The Przewalski horse
The Przewalski horse
They've recently redone their tiger cages so that each animal has a hill, pool, waterfall and an area of grass!

And if that's not enough, I believe they saved a species of Mongolian horse called the Przewalski horse from total obliteration.

Our turn

I'm not trying to undermine what she's saying, because everyone has a right to their opinion and I haven't seen every zoo in the country.

But this is an issue I feel really strongly about, and the way I see it is, it's because of us that a lot of the animals are in the position they are now in the wild.

So isn't it our turn to help them out before it's too late?"
