I fled Somalia to live in Salford
Updated 22 July 2003, 20.21
Mohammed Ibrahim
Mohammed Ibrahim, aged 14, was born in Somalia but now lives in Salford.

His family trekked across Kenya and sold a lot of their things to get a plane ticket to England.

He tells us about his experiences moving from a foreign country.

"My mum just woke me up one morning and said I had to leave because this terrible war was happening.

Half of my family is dead now, the other half is just split up all over the world.

The reason I came to England and not any other European country is you can have a better way of life.

There was a civil war in Somalia
There's more opportunity to do what I want.

When I first moved to this house, people started knocking on the doors at night and running away.

But now it's better. Everyone knows us, we've got good neighbours.

When I first came to England, I thought I was never going to fit in.

Now my friends are all from Manchester, so would I want to go back to Somalia?

More opportunities

I like here better than there. Education is better here and I can do more stuff and have more opportunities here than in Somalia.

Asylum seekers or refugees aren't here because they want to be.

They're forced by war or natural disasters.

Don't think they're here in this country to invade it. They're here because they're forced to be."
