I was a model for the day
Updated 03 September 2003, 15.52
Joanne was a model for the day
Joanne reports on modelling in a fashion show organised by hundreds of young people in London.

"I was out on my estate and our youth worker gave us some info about a summer fashion show that was happening.

Youth workers arrange for kids to get involved with things to keep kids off the street.

I filled out the form and said I wanted to be involved with modelling, hair and beauty and photography.

Audition

Then someone called me and invited me to come to the auditions - I was so excited!

Joanne was a model for the day
I went to the auditions and we had to walk up and down a catwalk. We got a bit of training from a real model called Kirsty but I still think it was harder than it looks.

In fact it's really weird! You have to walk in a certain way and I also think nerves kick in when you have to walk in front of people.

Still I must have been OK cos I got through, and started rehearsing every Tuesday night, practising the walk.

Glamour

The day was brilliant - we all got our hair and make up done. We also did loads of rehearsals before the main rehearsals, it was mad!

When we came to do it I was so excited and the adrenalin hit me and all I could think was that I really wanted to get on the catwalk.

I jammed it into my head that I was going to fall so much that if it happened I would have expected it! But I was fine in the end and it was great fun.

I'd like to have another go at modelling but as I'm only 5'2" it's not going to happen. But if I was taller I'd jump at the chance.

Young designer

It was nerve wracking on the night - there were over 1000 people in the audience.

But the really good thing about this event it that one young designer will be chosen to have their clothes in a high street store."

Joanne, 16, London
