Chatrooms can be safe if we're sensible
Updated 18 July 2003, 12.19
Internet chat can be safe
Hannah thinks people are stupid if they give out personal information in chatrooms.

And in her report she suggests ways of staying safe on the net.

"I think that people who go into chatrooms are entering at their own risk.

Personally I think chatrooms are a great way to get to know people all around the world.

But I know the basic rules of safe chatting.

Chatrooms would have been seen as dangerous if it wasn't for us.

Fact File
NEVER tell anyone:
Your real name
Your home, school or e-mail address
Your phone number
A photo of yourself
Your parents' credit card details

Giving out our personal information can have dangerous consequences - and I think people are stupid for doing so.

The way we should tackle this problem is reminding everybody of the risks with posters, adverts in teen magazines for example, where kids will see them.

Or when we enter chatrooms words like "postcode", "phone number" or "address" could be banned from being entered.

Numbers could also be banned.

This will not make the Internet absolutely safe but it may be an improvement."

Hannah, 13, Kent

Why don't you write us a Press Pack report - and get it published on the site?!

It can be about anything that's happened in your local area - or your views on the news.
