I get upset for people in poorer countries
Updated 13 July 2003, 10.31
Millions of people are starving in Ethiopia
Kate is worried about people who live in poor countries who are sometimes starving and living in bad conditions.

Here's her report.

"I get really upset when I read about another year of famine in Ethiopia or more floods in Bangladesh.

It makes me really mad when rich countries in the West still refuse to settle the Third World debt, with the large interest rate it is impossible for any poor country to pay off the debt and start to build a future.

I believe that we should help places like Africa, India and South America more.

'Open our eyes'

There are bad floods in Bangladesh
Empty promises don't feed starving people, it doesn't give peasant farmers a decent wage and it doesn't pay for much-needed medicines.

It's really surprising how little it costs to help and the money donated is used to build wells, schools, hospitals, houses. It is used to provide people with a future.

It's OK to feed somebody for the day but it would be much better to teach him to farm and give him the tools to do so.

I think we need to open our eyes and look around, see how lucky we are. Then we can start to help others to live."

Kate, 14, South Yorkshire
