I loved watching a live orchestra in action
Updated 12 July 2003, 08.34
Conductor John Adams with BBC Symphony Orchestra
Kipat went to the BBC Proms: Out and About with music performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and conducted by John Adams.

It's the first time Kipat has seen a live orchestra perform and in his report he tells us what he thought about the experience.

"The conductor introduced the orchestra at the beginning of the performance.

All the musicians were grouped into colours to see how the orchestra was made up.

Potter tune

Then they played a variety of tunes including Hungarian folk music and Salsa.

The brass section
Even the Harry Potter theme tune was played and many children danced and hummed along.

On your feet

It was a very informal atmosphere with dancing and singing.

Usually you have to be extremely quiet when listening to an orchestra.

But this way you could appreciate the music and have fun at the same time.

During the interval the musicians came to talk to the audience about their lives in the music industry.

And they showed us how they played their instruments and answered questions.

Encore!

My favourite piece was the Salsa piece at the end of the performance.

The conductor in action
It was a very lively tune and everyone began dancing. It definitely put a smile on my face.

And it was enjoyed by the audience so much that they played it three times!

Go again

This was my first experience of seeing a live orchestra and I loved it.

I would definitely advise anyone else to try it - I'm no doubt going to see another one."

Kipat, 11, London
