  I interviewed author Eoin Colfer
Updated 08 July 2003, 20.00
Press Packer Rebecca interviews Eoin Colfer
Rebecca won the chance to interview her fave author Eoin Colfer.

He told her how he writes his best selling stories - including Artemis Fowl.

Rebecca: Your books are really funny and exciting. What three things make a good book?
Eoin: Oh, that's a very hard question. Three things I would think [are] interesting characters, an involving plot, and a good writing style to keep people reading.

Rebecca: Where do you get your ideas from?

Eoin: I get my ideas from everywhere and anywhere - from life in general. But I get most of my ideas from my family, my four brothers who are real comedians. And also I have three or four friends who are very interesting. So anytime they say something funny I just write it down.

Rebecca: Are there plans to have the books filmed?
Eoin: Yeah there are plans and at the moment they're really involved with what's called production, and they're hoping to start filming this September. So hopefully it will be out sometime in 2004 which is going to be really exciting.

Rebecca: For kids who want to write what advice would you give?
Eoin: There are three things you need to do. You need to read as much as you possibly can. I've never, ever met a writer - and I've met a lot of famous writers - who weren't very very serious readers and if they're like me they probably have a book in every room in the house.

Secondly you need to keep a diary so that you can write down anything exciting or interesting that happens to you or your friends.

Thirdly you have to practise your writing whenever you can. Start small - maybe a page or two long story - then work until it's a full length book. But that can take up to 10 years so don't think you have to do it all in one week! "

Why don't you write us a Press Pack report - and get it published on the site?!

It can be about anything that's happened in your local area - or your views on the news.
