  I chose Northern Ireland's children's commisioner
Updated 29 June 2003, 12.56

Neil helped choose the children's commisioner for Northern Ireland..

In his report, he tells us about how the commisioner was chosen, and why it's a good thing.

"I was one of eight young people who helped to appoint the children's commissioner for Northern Ireland.

I became involved after joining the Northern Ireland Children's and Young People's Advisory Forum. I was voted on to the interview panel to help appoint the children's commissioner.

We interviewed nine people.

Nigel Williams was selected as the commissioner. He knows how to speak to young people and he doesn't talk down to them.

I think it's good to have a children's commissioner because sometimes in Government, children's issues get pushed back because people think we are less likely to kick up a fuss.

Really accessible

Children will be able to contact Nigel with text messages and e-mails, so he will be really accessible.

He will be looking at all sorts of issues which affect young people, such as road safety, teenage pregnancy, vandalism and play facilities for children.

I would like Nigel to do well so that England and Scotland will see that he is benefiting young people, and they will appoint children's commissioners as well. "

Neil, 14, Ballinderry
