We could be the first to finish OOTP!
Updated 19 June 2003, 08.05
Laura speed reading
Chris and Laura have been training hard to take part in a special speed reading event on the night OOTP is released.

Chris

"We're going to be speed reading the Harry Potter book on the night it comes out. We'll start at midnight and read as much as we can by 3am - we should have finished it by then.

Ten of us are taking part in the event in Manchester. We were all asked by the school to go to a speed reading training session and then we were asked if we would like to do it on the night Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix comes out.

Very exciting!

I'm really excited about the event. I like the Harry Potter series and it will be nice to be involved.

I'm not sure what's going to happen in Book Five but I'm guessing that it won't be Harry who dies!

At the moment I'm about 1,000 - 1,500 words a minute but I don't know how quickly I'll read it. I'd just like to finish the book and I'm pleased to be taking part."

Chris, 14, Loughborough

Laura

"We'd heard that Mrs Jones was the world expert on speed reading and a little group of us wanted to find out more and so we had a morning out of school to train. This involved memory techniques as well as how to speed read.

When we heard about the Harry Potter event, we jumped at the chance to get involved.

I don't know who'll die!

I really love Harry Potter - I'm a massive fan - it'll be such a good opportunity.

I've heard that someone's going to die in Book Five. I'm not sure who, but it might be Ron because he's not the main character.

On the night we'll be reading in 45 minute sections and then taking a 10 minute break and I'm hoping to do it in three 45 minute bursts.

When I've sped read things before I could recall 75% of what I read - even if you read a book slowly you can't remember everything you read so hopefully I'll be able remember most of it.

At least I'll be the first to read it out of all my friends!"

Laura, 14, Shepshed
