  I'm a martial arts champion!
Updated 02 May 2003, 11.02
Sophie's a Tae Kwon Do champion
Sophie recently became a European Taekwon-Do champion.

In her report she tells us what she likes about this martial art.

"I started doing Taekwon-Do with P.U.M.A. (Professional Unification of Martial Arts) when I was five years old.

And now I'm nine and the Girls' Under 16 European Champion.

It was quite frightening competing because a lot of the girls were older and taller than me.

Fact File
What is Taekwon-Do?
Taekwon-Do literally means The Art of the Foot and Hand
It is a Korean martial art and originated 3,000 years ago
It involves the use of punches, kicks, blocks, dodges and restraints
Taekwon-Do is now an Olympic event, first introduced at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney
I couldn't even eat my breakfast before the tournament because I was that nervous.

Train hard

I love Taekwon-Do because it's fun and the people are really friendly.

I train for 20 hours every week and I never get bored of doing it.

The training doesn't interfere with my school work at all.

And my instructor won't let me train if I don't get a good school report, so I always make sure my school work is done.

Stunt work

At the moment I'm what's called a red-stripe but I hope to be a black belt by early next year.

I'm also going to be competing in the World Championships in July which I'm really looking forward to.

When I'm older I would love to get into martial arts films and do some stunt work.

But at the moment I'm just really happy I took up Taekwon-Do and glad my mum didn't make me stick to my ballet and tap dancing lessons!"

Sophie, 9, Exeter
