My mum was a drug addict
Updated 05 June 2003, 17.42

John's mum used to take drugs before he was born.

In his report he tells us about a charity called Stars and how it helped him.

Stars is part of the Childrens Society and helps children aged between four and 13 who are having problems because their parents are using drugs.

"My mum used drugs before I was even born so I grew up not knowing any different.

I'm now 10 years old and have been coming to Stars for nearly a year.

Before I came to Stars I had no-one to talk to about stuff to do with drugs at my house.

Even though my mum doesn't take drugs any more, I was still worried that when she was stressed she'd start taking drugs again.

I'd search in the bin to see if she had used anything to take drugs, like cans with holes in for smoking crack.

My business

But since coming to Stars I have been able to talk about my worries.

I had no one to talk to before. I couldn't even tell my friends, I didn't want anyone to know my business.

I now feel that I am happy and can get on with my life, and I know that I don't have to search the bin anymore.

I think Stars can teach and help children to understand drugs and alcohol.

I have drawn a picture about all of the things that I have done at Stars and how I feel about drugs."

John, 10
