Staying awake for a good cause
Updated 18 March 2003, 09.51
Kids in Uganda
Amy helped raise money for kids in Uganda

Amy's youth group had a sponsored stay-awake to raise money for kids in Uganda.

Here Amy tells us what they got up to keep their eyes open.

"My youth group is held every other week and frequently holds fundraising events.

Recently my youth group held a sponsored stay awake for the people of Karamoja.

Not easy

We had to get sponsors who would only pay us if we fulfilled the task of staying up for 12 hours (7.30pm to 7.30am).

This may sound easy but it really isn't!

If we just sat down for a couple of minutes our eyes would start to shut.

Bouncy ball

When some people were beginning to fall asleep my friend and I had to occupy ourselves.

We found a large bouncy ball and I'm not sure how many games we had invented by the end of the night!

We also played lots of other games to keep us awake, even if was just running around because we were determined to get the money for the people less fortunate than us in Karamoja.

Improving lives

It really made us realise how lucky we are when we heard about the conditions of their life.

Karamoja is the poorest place in Uganda.

Unlike us only 20% of children are able to go to school and therefore the amount of people who can read and write is very small, only 12%.

Not only this but the people have to continually fight diseases such as malaria and skin problems.

Bed time!

The money we raise will hopefully improve some of the problems above.

Although there was only 15 of us doing the stay awake we managed to raise over 500 which is excellent!

It was so fun and for a good cause too.

But by 8.30am however, we were all fast asleep!"
