		My farm helps make Fairtrade chocolate

Rijayatu lives in a tiny village in Ghana.

Her parents' farm produces cocoa which helps to make Fairtrade chocolate bars for shops in the UK.

"My parents are cocoa farmers. My grandfather was also a cocoa farmer.

My father inherited his farm from my grandfather when he died.

I help on the farm, when I have finished my school work.

Early rise

When it is the harvest season I help gather up the pods.

I also go and fetch fresh water for helping the seedlings.

The water is a little bit of long distance from my farm so we have to collect it in a bucket.

I don't like the cocoa season because we have to wake up very early - around 5.00am to do the planting.

Fair price

A cocoa tree

Before my father joined Fairtrade, at the end of the year when he got payment for the cocoa he did not get a fair price.

Then we joined the Fairtrade he got fair price, then at the end of the year he gets more money, a bonus, for each bag of cocoa that he has sold.

Through Fairtrade I got to taste chocolate for the very first time. I thought it was delicious.

University dream

I would like to be a scientist and find a cure for Aids. I am worried that my parents cannot afford to send me to university to study.

But since my parents joined Fairtrade things are improving and my worries are now flying away."
