Treasure Planet is a gem of a film!
Updated 10 February 2003, 18.41
Mala at the premiere of Treasure Planet
Disney's latest film Treasure Planet, has been a flop in America - but is opening in the UK on Friday.

Mala went to the premiere for us, and here's her verdict.

"The film has the same basic story as the classic children's book, Treasure Island.

A young boy called Jim is given a treasure map and goes on an adventure in search of the loot.

Flying through space!
Flying through space!
But this version's set in the future.

Old-fashioned pirate ships fly through space, and the old pirate Long John Silver is now a cyborg - part man, part machine.

And the parrot in the original has been replaced by a very cute cyborg pet called 'Morph', cos it can morph into anything and everything!

New-style film

It took 17 years from the film-makers having the idea for the concept to the film being made.

And it combined CGI digital wizardry with old-style hand drawn cartoons, which are meant to be more expressive.

I thought the adaptation and the animation worked really well.

It's perhaps not as magical as Toy Story, and it hasn't been a hit in America.

But overall I thought the film looked really good and it kept me gripped all the way through.

I would give it an eight out of ten."

Mala, 13, London
