We have to stop elephants dying out
Updated 11 January 2003, 12.52
African elephant
Catherine's favourite animal is the elephant.

Here she writes about wanting to do more to save them from being poached.

"I feel very strongly about ivory hunting in East Africa.

Elephants are my favourite, they are such magnificent animals.

It is so sad to see them seriously injured or even killed by people who want to make trinkets for tourists.

Gone forever?

I have been to Kenya four times as my auntie and uncle used to live there.

The National Park where the Sheldricks Trust works to save elephants
The elephant population is slowly declining and if nothing is done about it then very soon these fantastic creatures are going to be wiped out FOREVER!

On my trips to Kenya I went to Daphne Sheldricks orphanage for baby elephants and rhinos.

She has set up a trust to help stop this terrible crime.

Elephants come in traumatised and sometimes hanging onto life by a thread.

If we could all do something to help then maybe these fantastic animals may not be wiped out."

Catherine, 12, Co Durham

Why don't you write us a Press Pack report - and get it published on the site?!

It can be about anything that's happened in your local area - or your views on the news.
