Puppies should not be Christmas presents
Updated 07 January 2003, 09.47
Abandoned puppies
Lucy wants to solve the problem of puppies being abandoned.

Here's what she suggests.

Every year newspapers show pictures of puppies abandoned as unwanted Christmas presents.

And every year the National Canine Defence League (NCDL) tighten their campaigns on dogs being for life, not just for Christmas.

No Christmas sale

Not a lot of thought often goes into the care and welfare of these dogs given as presents and that is the most likely reason they are abandoned.

Abandoned puppy
They do make nice presents but they are living creatures too!

I think a way to solve this problem could be for dogs not to be sold over the Christmas period (mid November to mid January).

That way dogs would not be bought just as a gift.

Those people who were seriously ready to own a dog would surely be able to wait until mid January.

Think carefully

Millions of people are loving owners of dogs.

Many of these people thought carefully before buying a dog.

It's unlikely that this problem will just disappear so just think again and think carefully before putting a puppy on your Christmas list next year."

Lucy, 14, Hertfordshire
