Dad will lose everything if hunting's banned
Updated 20 September 2002, 08.57
A countryside march
Tom and his family will be joining hundreds of thousands of people at a march in London this Sunday to protest about the way countryside communities are treated.

In the first of three special Press Packs Tom talks about how a ban on fox hunting will affect his life.

"I do not think of fox hunting as cruel but as a humane way of pest control.

Most people say that when a fox is killed it is a painful slow death when really it dies within an instant.

More cruel

Shooting is an alternative way of killing foxes but in my opinion a lot more cruel, as many foxes are only wounded and die a painful death, which sometimes takes days.

As I have been brought up on a farm I have seen the damage foxes can cause - like killing lambs, chickens and other ground nesting birds.

Hunting has preserved a healthy fox population in Northumberland for hundreds of years and kept them to a manageable level.

Our countryside

People from towns come to live in the countryside and think they own it.

Fox hounds
There would be no work for the hounds
They tell us foxes are cute and cuddly and do no harm - I know different and also know that nature is cruel.

Lose job

If fox hunting was banned then my dad and all the huntsmen would lose their jobs, their homes, plus all the hounds would have to be put down.

I will be marching in London on Sunday to save my his job, home, hounds and for me and my family to enjoy the countryside for a long time to come."

Tom, 11, Northumberland
