Our world record dog walkies attempt!
Updated 17 September 2002, 09.28

Lucy and her dog Bounce took part in a special event - to take as many dogs as possible for a walk.

But was it a world record?

"At the weekend, the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals attempted a World Record Dog Walk.

The world record was held by the UK until April 2002, when it was taken by the Great Texas Dog Walk, with 3,117 dogs.

Sad face

I have had her for nearly two years now.

We bought her from a Scottish SPCA shelter where she had been for about three months and we thought she needed a home, because her face looked so droopy and sad.

I interviewed Doreen Graham of the Scottish SPCA, who told me: "We have had all sorts of breeds on the Walk today, and some wonderful mongrels.

There was even a little dog called Pixie, whose owner is a diabetic and she lets him know when he needs an injection."

Clever dog

I went to speak to Pixie's owner, Adrian Lynn. He said that Pixie gets very agitated when his blood sugar levels go down.

She trained herself to do this, which seems amazing, but actually she is just using her sense of smell.

Little legs

Even though the event took place in Scotland, there was only one Scottie on the Walk - Doreen's dog Bonnie.

We weren't sure if she would manage the three-mile Walk, as she only has little short legs, but she made it round.

Another dog, called Bouncer, was an old mongrel with three legs.

She managed to walk about the first mile and then she got too tired and had to be pushed in a buggy!

Hospital visits

Connor was found near to death from neglect and was taken to a Scottish SPCA shelter near Glasgow.

Many weeks later, he went off to a new home.

He is now a registered Therapet, which means he visits people in hospital.

It was a wonderful day, with lots of people and lovely friendly dogs.

At the end we learned that we had not broken the World Record but we had set a Scottish record."
