We're checking out the Earth Summit!
Updated 01 September 2002, 11.47
Press Packers with CBBC Presenter Adrian Dixon
The Earth Champions Stephanie, Peter, Rhys and Tim are reporting for us from South Africa on the Earth Summit

This is their second diary

"Today we chilled out at the Gold Reef City theme park. We scared ourselves silly on the Runaway Train ride before taking the road to the Ubuntu Village.

There we met Environment Minister Michael Meacher, who was there to speak at the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Then we explored the Ubuntu Village, which is the nerve centre of the World Summit. Various cultural, educational and entertainment events take place every day.

Rhys:
Greetings from South Africa!
Greetings from South Africa!
We saw some great exhibitions on sustainable projects. A great example of the exhibition was the Robert Swan show, where a video of his work was shown followed by a viewing of his famous boat.

Robert gave some positive words - welcoming our views and congratulating us on our achievements. This made me and the three others feel quite important people when I recognised that our views do count and will make a difference. Outside the exhibition hall the theme of sustainability grew, with the streets lined with stalls, selling hand crafted objects. It was a typical African street, and was great to see the traditional African way of living.

Stephanie:
I though the Ubuntu Village was very interesting. I asked Michael Meacher about what the Government are doing about renewable energy for new houses in Britain and guess what? He didn't answer my question. He went on about how "renewable energy is very important".

Peter:
The morning had been good, especially the Runaway Train, which was my first roller coaster ride, but the afternoon was just as exciting at Ubuntu. We met Robert Swan who is the first man ever to explore both the North and South poles - cool! We saw his yacht too, which he used to get to the Antarctic.

Tim:
We got to talk to Robert Swan, who explored the Antarctic and removed 100 tons of rubbish from the continent. His eye was really weird - it got damaged when he was exploring the Antarctic because the sun's heat was so strong because of the hole in the ozone layer.
