Fighting poverty with champagne won't work
Updated 27 August 2002, 15.53
Peter is going to the Earth Summit in South Africa
Peter's off to the Earth Summit in South Africa. He'll be representing Northern Ireland and will be putting some questions to the politicians.

"I got into the environment a couple of years ago when our school started an eco-school committee - I was voted onto it last year.

Bat boxes and bird tables

At school we recycle cans and paper. We also have bird boxes and bat boxes out in the playground. There's a history and a cottage garden, plus a woodland area as well.

I support the Kyoto agreement to eliminate gas emissions and get fresh water to everyone - apparently 80 per cent of the world's diseases come from dirty water.

At the summit I'm hoping to make fresh water a big issue. I'm going to ask delegates like David Trimble some questions. I might ask him what personal goal would he set for living in a more sustainable way.

Why are they drinking champagne?

There are lots of stories about what food the delegates are eating.

If it's true I think it's pretty stupid - they're trying to fight poverty while a few miles down the road there are children dying from starvation.

I would like to ask them why they're doing it - how can you help solve poverty with a glass of champagne in your hand?

I think people are also protesting about the summit because the Rio Earth Summit didn't really work - they all had good ideas but went back to their own countries and didn't follow them through.

While in South Africa we're also going to the Ivory Park to look at the sustainable housing.

It's sustainable because it's solar powered and the wood used to help build it comes from sustainable trees.

I hope there will be a good outcome from the Earth Summit and it will mean there are less people living in poverty.

Peter Burton, 11, Ballymena

The Earth Summit will take place from 26 August to 4 September.
