  Everyone can help the environment
Updated 30 August 2002, 09.04

Shona says we should be protecting the environment for the next generation.

"A lot of you may think that saving the environment is just about putting litter in the bin.

Well you are right, but there is so much more to it than that.

Many of us aren't even aware of when we might be harming the environment.

Smoking, spraying aerosols, using leaded fuel for cars and littering are just a few of the hazards.

Ways to help

Only fill the kettle up with the amount of water you need
Only fill the kettle up with the amount of water you need
Rest assured there are some ways in which we can help the environment too.

We can use unleaded petrol in cars, put rubbish in the bin, wash clothes at 40 degrees instead of 60 degrees and only fill the kettle with the amount you require.

We have to think about the next generation - what sort of world will they be living in?

By only doing little things now like recycling and being aware of what we are doing can make a big difference to other people's futures."

Shona, 14, Fife
