I want to help make the Earth a better place
Updated 25 August 2002, 14.20
Woodcraft Folk met last summer to discuss global issues
Rachel will be attending the Earth Summit in South Africa.

It's where leaders from all over the world will meet and talk about the future of our planet.

Here's what Rachel hopes to achieve by being there.

"Sustainability is all about using the Earth's resources in such a way that people who come after us can use them in the same way.

The purpose of the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development, or the 'Earth Summit', is to help ensure this happens.

Of course this is really important to young people - when we're grown up, it's us who will have to live with the consequences of decisions made now!

I'm going to the Summit as part of a delegation of 11 young people from the Woodcraft Folk.

Last summer we held a big International Camp in Nottinghamshire, which was attended by people from all over the world.

A better planet

The theme of the camp was sustainability, and at the end of the camp we wrote a declaration on this.

Issues ranged from food to energy. We'll be promoting this at the Summit.

I'm really excited about going to the Summit, and I hope that the decisions made there will help to make the Earth a better place."

Rachel, 14, Camden

The Earth Summit will take place from 26 August to 4 September.
