  My Diary: Tennis player
Updated 16 August 2002, 16.41
Tennis player Laura
Hi everyone, I'm Laura, I'm 14 and I'm a tennis player.

When I'm not playing in a tournament I train for four hours a day with my coach.

I play at one of four academies for the top young tennis players in Britain.

This is my diary.

15-21 July

I went out to Holland to play in a big youth tennis tournament, the Windmill Cup.

Before the tournament we had lots of time to practice, and as there was no opponent for me in the first round I had even more time to practice before the second round, but I still lost two sets to one.

I was also in the doubles with another British girl Jade and we won.

After losing in the singles I went into the consolation singles and beat a Polish girl who I also had to play in the next round of the doubles. Unfortunately the Polish girl and her partner got their own back in the doubles.

But I was still in the singles and beat an Australian girl in the second round before losing in the quarters.

After being knocked out of the tournament I had the chance to hang around for a couple of days before heading to France for another tournament.

22 July

Things didn't go well at the start of the next tournament in France because I lost in the first round to a Swedish girl 6-4, 7-5.

The doubles went just as bad, as Laura and I lost in the first round.

It looked even worse in the consolation round when I had to play the number two seed after she was a shock loser in the main event.

I didn't think I could beat her but I did in three sets and then I won in the next round as well!

Unfortunately I didn't get any further and lost in the quarter finals to a girl from Belarus.

5-10 August

After France I was able to play closer to home in the 15 & under British Junior National Championships.

I'm in the under 15 age group which means a lot of the other girls are a year older than me and more experienced players.

I managed to get all the way to the quarter finals before losing to the second seed, so I was happy with how I played.

I also got to the quarters in the doubles, but lost to another top pair, sisters Laura and Claire.

Check back in a month's time when Laura will be juggling GCSEs and tennis and will hopefully have recovered from a leg injury.
