I love acting at my local youth theatre
Updated 13 August 2002, 09.35

Sarah's working hard at her ambition to be a professional actor.

Here she describes what goes on at her local youth theatre group - and why she wants us to wish her luck!

"I have loved drama and acting since I was small but was always told that it was not a steady career and most people who train fail to find work.

However no-one managed to squash my love of acting and when I was 10 I found out about my local youth theatre.

We do an average on one performance every six months and work in a theatre which can hold 500 people.

Tough competition

To join there are no auditions, you simply pay 50p a week and £2.50 a year insurance and you are a member. There are auditions to get into the shows and these are very competitive but great fun.

Once the parts are chosen we spend six months practising once a week, this often means a lot of sitting around and memorising HUGE chunks of script by heart but it is definitely worth it!

In the weeks before a show is due to take place we have rehearsals every night and all day (5-6 hours) at weekends. This means that school work has to wait but the teachers usually understand.

Embarrassing costumes!

The shows run for a week and we often perform in front of over 400 people. We are a youth theatre but we do everything professionally, including uncomfortable make-up and embarrassing costumes!

The performance nights and the audience reception make all the work worth while.

Fingers crossed

I have auditions next week for a show taking place in February.

I hope I do well but I have very strong competition for the part I'd like and I don't want to get my hopes up!

I also hope to audition for the National Youth Theatre but I will have such a lot of competition I doubt I will get in. WISH ME LUCK!

Anyone who enjoys acting should try and join a youth theatre. You get experience and it's great fun! Who knows, you may make it to the professional stage!"
