Getting our hands dirty was fun!
Updated 07 July 2002, 10.03
Children charming worms
Ben and Abigail got their hands dirty at the Worm Charming Championships.

Here they explain what you have to do to charm the worms out of the ground.

"The Willaston Worm Charming Championships have been running for 23 years and is still going strong.

It's a competition to see who gets the most worms out of the ground.

How do you charm worms?

The field where it took place was split into individual worm charming plots.

There were two people in each plot.

The ground was then banged with garden forks or sticks and because of the vibration in the soil, the worms came to the surface.

There was even a man playing music with a saxophone near the ground to also make the ground vibrate.

The competition lasted half an hour, then all the worms were counted - there was a prize for the winner.

This year the most worms charmed was 305.

Afterwards all the worms were put together in a pit - it's up to them to make their way back home in the ground!

It was really great fun joining in the action, and getting our hands dirty was the best part - we'll definitely do it again next year."
