  Pressures of childhood in China
Updated 21 May 2002, 19.28
Li is from China
Li explains why it's hard being an only child in China.

"Most families in China only have one child.

So because we don't have brothers and sisters, parents put all their hopes that one child and do all they can for him or her.

The pressure placed on children can be good and bad.

Hard to cope

Parents hope their children will achieve better in life than they did.

That can turn out to be good but most kids in big cities find that overwhelming.

Better life in cities

Map of China
Growing up in one of China's big cities has many advantages.

There is better housing, transport and generally it's easier growing up there.

In remote areas, it can be very hard, especially if you are poor.

But from ancient times the Chinese have looked highly on their children so they will try and give a better environment for them - even if they are poor."

Li, 18, China
