Peckham's not as bad as it seems
Updated 25 April 2002, 12.40

Damilola Taylor was killed in Peckham, in south London.

But Shakire, who lives there, says it's not as bad as you might think.

"There's nothing really bad about Peckham. I suppose there's fights like any normal area, and crimes - which happen everywhere.

Bad press

Map of Peckham
I wouldn't feel scared to go down to Peckham and I don't find it threatening.

I can just go there, feel comfortable with my friends and act normal.

The press coverage has been bad about Damilola Taylor.

But people shouldn't just look at the bad side of a town - they should look on the good side and see what it's really like.

Peckham's improving

One of the things I do in my spare time is write for the Peckham Young People's Magazine.

There's also a great leisure centre and new library where you can study.

They're also knocking down all those horrible flats and building nice new fresh ones.

And a centre named after Damilola Taylor is about to be opened - you'll be able to play football there.

It's like a normal place - not always as bad as you think it is."

Shakire, 13, London
