Boys doing ballet is no big deal!
Updated 25 April 2002, 09.19
More boys are starting to learn ballet
John is studying at The Royal Ballet School and hopes to become a professional dancer.

"I first started dancing when I was seven.

I would go and watch my sister take her class and then one day I decided to join in.

Because I liked it so much I wanted to start having lessons myself.

Ballet school

First I took ballet, then some modern and tap classes as well.

Now I'm studying at The Royal Ballet School and learning all types of dance including ballet, Irish dancing and jazz.

Billy Elliot was a film about a boy who loved to dance

On top of the dance lessons we have each day, we also have regular lessons that you would have at any other school.

It's lots of hard work, we start at 8.30am and work until 6.30pm every day.

They say that the film Billy Elliot has made it easier for boys to take ballet and not feel uncomfortable about it.

But I wouldn't know because I haven't seen the film.

All I know is that I love playing rugby and football and I love dancing as well - it really isn't a big deal!"

John, 12, Halifax
