  Could cloning protect rare animals?

Press Packer Gemma thinks scientists should clone endangered species.

"People are talking about bringing pets back to life and making better organs, but what about expanding the idea of bringing back endangered species?

Manatee
Manatees are endangered animals
I'm going swimming with manatees this Christmas, and they are one of my favourite animals.

However, hardly anyone in my class knew what they were before I did a talk on them, because they are so endangered.

This will be the same with animals like the tiger, rhino and panda in about 100 years time.

Increase numbers

I just don't know why the scientists don't clone endangered species, then breed them in captivity so their numbers go up more quickly.

The only problem is that it would be really expensive to set about doing it, because scientists would have to try over and over again just to get ONE animal right.

It is better than using what they can do on rich people's pets - I don't agree with cloning pets.

As long as they stay helping animals and don't start cloning humans, I think it is quite a good idea."
