  Our day in parliament
Updated 02 April 2002, 10.19
The Houses of Parliament in London
Charlotte and Chris spent the day visiting the Houses of Parliament in London. Here's what they thought of it.

"Before we came to London we had one lesson about parliament. We knew who Tony Blair was and that our local MP was Bill Cash but that was all.

Westminster Hall had a really high ceiling. We were told by our guide that Henry VIII would play tennis there and one of his balls got stuck in the roof - they found it 100 years later.

Next stop was the House of Lords. It looked very posh and was half covered in gold.

The House of Commons was much smaller and there was a debate going on inside between all the politicians.

They didn't wait for people to stop talking, they just shouted over each other. If you did this in class you'd get a detention."

"In the morning our MP Bill Cash came and welcomed us and answered any questions we had. He said that they were better questions than the politicians ask in the House of Commons.

I asked him about the NHS and he said nurses and doctors should be paid more.

In the House of Lords I sat on the Woolsack. It's what the judges sit on when there's a court session.

It's filled with the wool from one sheep from every country in the Commonwealth."

Charlotte and Chris visited the Houses of Parliament on a tour by the House of Parliament Education Unit as part of their citizenship course.
